How does CA type approval work in Kenya?

The Communications Authority of Kenya approves the model and band version before it can be sold or used. Approval is hardware-specific: the frequency range, power and channel capacity on the certificate must match the radio in the box. The local importer usually holds the approval and handles the application with the manufacturer’s technical file.

Frequency authorisation is separate. The operator applies for the channels and locations it will use, and the radios are programmed after the authorisation is granted. For a hotel group or a security company with several sites, list all locations in the application so one authorisation covers the network.

Coverage in Nairobi is often limited by tall buildings and interference, while coastal and rural sites face distance and terrain. A single repeater on a roof can cover a compact property; a lodge, campus or multi-building site needs a survey and possibly a second repeater or a distributed antenna system.

How do radios enter Kenya?

Depending on the product and route, KEBS or PVoC certification may be requested. The importer should confirm this before the order leaves the factory. For first shipments, a small quantity can validate the document pack before a larger order is committed.
