A plant is a radio-hostile place by design. Steel frames, pipe racks, tanks, conveyor galleries and underground service tunnels reflect signals unpredictably, while motors, welding sets and variable-speed drives raise the noise floor. Coverage that works outside the office often stops at the first process building.

Audio is a safety issue. Machines run loud, and a message that has to be repeated is a message that was not heard. The system has to be loud, robust and simple enough to operate with dirty gloves.
